If you don't pay

If you don't pay your rent or the agreed payment plan we'll contact you by:

  • Telephone
  • Text
  • E-mail
  • Letter
  • In person at your home.

We do this to make sure you're aware of the situation. It means we can help you take steps to pay-off your arrears. You risk losing your home if you don't pay your rent.

Failure to pay your rent could result in legal action. You will have to pay any legal costs. Legal action of this sort may also affect your ability to get credit or a loan.

Take a look at the useful links to the right of this page for organisations who can help with debt problems.

Am I eligible for housing benefit?

Housing benefit can help you pay your rent. If you're on a low income and have savings of less than £16,000 you may be entitled to support.

Any savings will be ignored when calculating benefit if you're aged 60 or over and receive the 'guarantee credit' element of pension credits. Use this online check to see if you're eligible.

Housing benefit does not cover

  • Mortgage payments
  • Heating and hot water charges included in your rent
  • Water rates
  • Service charges for things like laundry or household cleaning
  • Charges for 'general counselling and support' such as service support officers (wardens) and emergency pull-cord alarms.

If you receive housing benefit it's still your responsibility to make sure that all your rent is paid to us every week.

If housing benefit payments are delayed - or not paid at all - you may get behind with your rent. You must pay us any rent arrears or you run the risk of losing your home. It's best to make sure you deal with any problems quickly.
